The first Brazilian Symposium on Sustainable Design (SBDS) and the International Symposium on Sustainable Design (ISSD) were organized by the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) and took place in Curitiba-PR in 2007. Since then, it has been hosted by several teaching institutions and research in the country every two years. The second edition happened in 2009, in São Paulo-SP, organized by the Anhembi Morumbi University. In 2011, the event took place in Recife-PE, organized by the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). In 2013, it was jointly organized in Porto Alegre-RS by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), University of Vale dos Sinos River (Unisinos) and Ritter dos Reis University Center (UniRitter). In 2015, only the national version (SBDS) took place in Rio de Janeiro-RJ, organized by the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). In 2017, completed 10 years and was held in Belo Horizonte-MG by the Graduate Program in Built Environment and Sustainable Heritage and by the Architecture and Urbanism Technology Department of the Federal University of Minas Gerais - UFMG.
The 2019 edition will be held in Recife, organized by Federal University of Pernambuco - Laboratório O Imaginário and Design Department and will adopt SDS - Simpósio de Design Sustentável + Sustainable Design Symposium, as defined in the Assembly in the 2017 edition.
The SDS 2019 will maintain the same format of the last two editions based on the three pillars of social, environmental and economic sustainability, focusing on the six themes related to design - social innovation; crafts; sustainable cities; materials, manufacturing and sustainability; circular economy and local development, will nevertheless return to the international character. The essence will remain in bringing together researchers, students and design professionals, as well as representatives from the productive and governmental sectors to jointly discuss and expand theoretical reflection and deepening, confronting current practices for understanding the future of design in relation to aspects related to sustainable development.
